Ever since the Affordable Care Act was enacted, it's drawn its fair share of supporters and detractors. But one thing is clear: People need health care. Regardless of your stance on politics, most people can agree that the idea of people being denied access to health care is a problem, and it's one that the people over at (un)Occupy Albuquerque and Kalpulli Izkalli hope to remediate with their Fourth Annual Medicine For the People By the People event, happening Saturday, April 18, at the Endorphin Power Company (509 Cardenas SE). The event will feature numerous health care providers lending their services to the community free of charge by “serving those who live in fear of limited or no access to health care, or those who have had no success with the health care provided to them.” The event also honors Mary Hawkes, who volunteered at the event two years ago, before she was fatally shot by an Albuquerque police officer in April 2014. A ceremony starts things off at 11:30am, and the healing happens from 12 to 6pm, during which goers can partake in massages, yoga workshops, blood pressure checks, diabetes consultations and more. Annual event where health care providers come together to share their services with the community for no cost.
We hope to empower each other with awareness about health justice and our inherent right to heal and be cared for during times of illness and transition. This event is intended to be part of a movement to change the model of health care provided in our community. In a capitalist system there is little value in healing. We will be serving those who live in fear of limited or no access to health care, as well as those who have had no success with the health care provided to them. We will make available knowledge and exposure to many forms of health care available within our community. By providing exposure and education to many paths of wellness, we wish to freely share what we believe is innately human: a right to heal! We believe that all seekers of wellness, mind, body, and spirit may find empowerment and freedom.
