Abderrahmane Sissako’s drama tells the story of Kidane, a cattle herder who lives with his family in the dunes outside the ancient Malian city of Timbuktu.

¡Globalquerque! and the NHCC present the International Cinema Series in September: films in this series are presented in partnership with ¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico’s Eleventh Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture, returning to the NHCC on September 25 & 26. . 

They are able to keep a distance from the jihadist militia who control the city and impose their fundamentalist regime upon its inhabitants, banning music, laughter, cigarettes, and even soccer. Their destiny changes abruptly, however, when a dispute involving Kidane and one of his neighbors forces them to confront the growing terror head-on.

Winner of the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the François Chalais Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, Timbuktu was nominated for the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
