New Mexico Jazz Workshop presents concerts of jazz, blues and salsa. Music by Combo Unica.

The evening skies over Albuquerque should glow more brightly than ever this summer as the New Mexico Jazz Workshop marks its 40th year by presenting a colorful and exciting series of concerts “Under the Stars” at the Albuquerque Museum’s spacious amphitheater, 2000 Mountain Road NW.

The weekly amalgam of jazz, blues and salsa, which runs from June 3 through August 13, is ranging farther afield this year with a number of groups from out of state set to complement the established troupe of local artists who reappear from summer to summer to charm and entice their devoted audiences.

All shows are held at the Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater (2000 Mountain Road NW, Albuquerque, NM)

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Children 12 and under are free.

A native of Santa Fe, JQ started playing trumpet professionally when he was a teenager. He graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music with a dual degree in Jazz Performance and Chinese. After an 8-year stint in China as a jazz musician, JQ returned to New Mexico in 2010. In 2014, he wrote, arranged and played with his band, Five Below, on his CD "Tales of Enchantment". A song from that album "Always a Reason" won Best Jazz Song at the NM Music Awards in 2014. The New Mexico Jazz Workshop commissioned JQ to create a piece for our 40th birthday. That composition "Digging the Well", will premier at this concert. The piece will incorporate a dance component performed by students of the National Dance Institute of Albuquerque.

Threepenny Cabaret: Oh, the shark has… From the dark menace of “Mack the Knife” to the shining hope of “My Ship,” the music of composer Kurt Weill stands out for its sophistication, beauty, and intense dramatic interest. Jazz vocalist Marietta Benevento presents a select set of his songs, spanning 1930s Berlin to the New York stage, swing tunes to sultry tangos, and more. With her, a band of Albuquerque’s best instrumentalists, including Jim Ahrend on piano, Michael Olivola on bass, Douglas Cardwell on drums, and Phil Arnold on trombone and chromatic harmonica. Also, as a special feature of the show, original dances created and performed by Romy Keegan, with dancers of Maple Street Dance Space. The words, the music, and the movement all come together in what promises to be a most memorable night of Jazz Under the Stars – not to be missed!
