Collaborative exhibition of photolithographic prints by B.J. Nierengarten-Smith.

Grace Jewelry/Lifestyle Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of “Emergence”, a collaborative exhibition of photolithographic prints by Santa Fe-based artist B.J. Nierengarten-Smith, on view at 125 E. Palace Avenue from July 7 to August 6.  This is the artist’s (2nd? 3rd?) solo exhibition in Santa Fe and Grace Gallery’s debut art exhibit.

“Emergence” features gallery owner and designer Hillary Randolph’s selection of 11 of Niergarten-Smith’s prints, inspired by the artist’s travels to India. The works were chosen in order to explore and celebrate similarities between the artist and designer’s worldviews and aesthetics, which juxtapose the contemporary and traditional, femininity and power—and highlight the transformative qualities of color and texture.

Says Nierengarten-Smith, “My work in printmaking is slowly and constantly changing as I create images and impressions of the exotic. In this case, I use appropriated images from Indian history and apply current methods in printmaking to make pictorial fantasies with an aura of richness and mystery, adding my favorite brilliant colors to stop the eye and capture the heart. Hillary’s enthusiastic nature and keen eye operate in the same manner as do my mine. We both see possibilities where there is little or nothing, grab them, fuse and develop them into icons that anyone can possess.”

Randolph adds, “For many years my jewelry designs emphasized a contemporary, sculptural aesthetic. Grace, however, was created to explore something more subtle and feminine--an attitude toward adornment that emphasizes the many ways in which we women interpret and express our nature on a daily basis. The ‘Emergence’ exhibit, to me, is a visual conversation between me and B.J., about the excitement of making something gorgeous and unexpected out of smaller, more recognizable parts.”

“Emergence” opens July 7 at Grace Gallery with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
