A Midsummer Night's Wings
Calling all lovers of humming, wing'd creatures: have you heard of the Festival of Flight? Commencing on Saturday, the 6th day of August, a most pleasant day is in sight. Investigate pollinators, butterflies, birds and witness a dragonfly capture. Walk amongst critters of which you will learn, and meet birds with Wildlife Rescue of New Mexico. Understand porcupines, lizards and snakes (don't these animals sound quite enticing?) You won't want to miss it, I make no mistake! 'Tis bound to be just mesmerizing. The invitation extends to those young and old. Not a single penny's required. The Rio Grande Nature Center is where it unfolds. And please—only leave when you're tired! (Monica Schmitt)
Bilingual, guided walks to learn about native animals. Watch a hummingbird capture, banding and release, an insect capture, indentification and release and learn about nature journaling.
Presented by the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, Summer Wings begins Friday evening with BioBlitz events (currently in developmnet). Events on Saturday include a series of guided walks: On birds, pollinators, butterflies, Southwestern plants, lizards and snakes, porcupines, and a family bilingual nature walk. The day also includes a speaker program; hummingbird capture, banding, and release; dragonfly/damselfly capture/ ID, an release; nature journaling with Margie O'Brien; live birds with Wildlife Rescue; bird ID with the Audubon Society; and crafts for kids.
