Downtown Summerfest

Wailing Through Downtown with a Groove

Saranga U Nara
The Wailers

The City of Albuquerque continues to provide excellent entertainment this summer as it carries on with Summerfest. The latest version of the venerably fashionable, ultimately groovalicious event takes place Downtown at Burque's own Civic Plaza. On Saturday, August 6, from 5-10:30pm, the center of Downtown will be the site of concerts, food-trucks, beer and wine vendors and a local artisan market. This year's featured performers at Downtown Summerfest are none other than internationally renowned recording and touring artists the Wailers. Recall this is the band that backed Bob Marley as he popularized reggae in North America and beyond during the 1970s and 1980s. The band revolves around Marley lieutenant and inheritor Aston Barrett and also includes legendary reggae masters like Anthony Creary as well as newcomers to the genre like Barrett's son, multi-instrumentalist Aston Barrett Jr. Altogether, the Wailers represent the glorious past and the growing future of reggae. Local ska stalwarts The Big Spank are also on the bill and funkified boogie adherents Cactus Slim & The Goatheads and Latin rhythm experts Suavecito open. (August March)
