Prana is a Sanskrit word meaning breath, vital energy, and life force. It is also a five voice, a cappella ensemble, founded in 2000 by Baird Hersey, that uses only the breath to make sound, to relax the body, still the mind, and open the heart. Prana’s sound is a unique blend of traditional western vocal music and the music of India, Tibet, Tuva, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Georgia and the Ituri rainforest, with a strong emphasis on vocal harmonics. A composer and guitarist best known for his work with The Year of The Ear big band from the 1970’s and 80’s, Baird Hersey has been a student of yoga and overtone singing since 1988. A National Endowment for the Arts Composition Fellow, his diverse musical career has included commissions and support from Harvard University, New York State Council for the Arts, New Mexico Arts, The Brooklyn Bridge Centennial Sound and Light Spectacular, The Public Theater, Meet the Composer, The Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and performances throughout the US and Europe. Hersey has recorded 14 albums as a leader or soloist, and recorded or performed with Nexus, Steve Smith (Journey), Doane Perry (Jethro Tull), Paul Winter, Graham Parker, Krishna Das, Wah!, and Aine Minogue. Besides Hersey, Prana comprises Amy Fradon, Kirsti Gholson, Timothy Hill, and Bruce Milner.
Prana will also perform at GIG Performance Space 1808 Second St, Santa Fe. Sunday October 2, 7:30pm
This concert is made possible through support from the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF); the National Endowment for the Arts; and New Mexico Arts, a division of the Office of Cultural Affairs.
