The FreeSpook Movement invites you to join us for an afternoon of hip-hop, poetry, food, and live art. This is a benefit show to raise money for Michael 'Esé Spook' Armendariz and his family to cover legal fees for Spook's upcoming habeas case. Our growing list of talented performers includes Asliani, Running WithArrows, Monica Salazar, Manuel Gonzalez and Sarita Gonzalez, Government Cheese, Robert Wilson, Kindra Aryana, Tom Peterson (The Zone), Charles Powell and Jimi B from Street Beat!

$5 suggested donation at the door. Frito pie and tamales for sale. We will also be auctioning art donated by currently and previously incarcerated friends of the FreeSpook Movement, and art by Michael himself! All proceeds will go towards Michael's legal fund. We will also be drawing the winner of the Black Heritage Stamp Collection Raffle, generously donated by Charles Powell.

Bringing Out the Truth

FreeSpook benefit addresses injustice with art

Fourteen years ago Michael “Esé Spook” Armendariz and his best friend were involved in a fight outside of a bar in Los Lunas that involved several intoxicated, off-duty law enforcement officers. In the violent scuffle Armendariz's friend—who was out celebrating his recent engagement—nearly lost his life and another—a Valencia County deputy sheriff—did. The details remain obscure, in part due to the fact that a significant amount of evidence that would have freed Armendariz was allegedly tampered with or destroyed. Armendariz was sentenced to 43 years in prison for first degree murder and third-degree aggravated battery. He's already served fourteen, two of which were done in solitary confinement.
