Santa Fe Community College and AARP Offer Free Income Tax Help
Free Income Tax Preparation Help Begins January 27, 2017
SANTA FE, NM – Santa Fe Community College, in partnership with the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide, will host free income tax preparation assistance beginning Friday, January 27. The twelfth annual free tax preparation service will be available in the William C. Witter Fitness Education Center at SFCC, 6401 Richards Ave.
Beginning January 27, Tax-Aide will be available Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In addition, tax preparation assistance will be available starting Wed. Feb. 1 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 417 Agua Fria Street, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Assistance will be available through April 18, except when the college is closed (March 13-19 for spring break and April 14-16 for spring holiday).
In addition to providing the location for tax preparation services, SFCC accounting students who were trained specifically for the service will be among the 75 volunteers available to assist anyone in filing their taxes.
Last year, the service helped close to 10,000 taxpayers gain more than $10.5 million in tax refunds. Exceptions for help in preparation may be made if the client has unusually complicated tax circumstances. The service is also not available to small business owners who have employees or depreciation.
Tax-Aide District Coordinator Peter Doniger asked that those seeking assistance with their tax return have all tax forms collected prior to coming in for help. Be sure to bring all of the information and documents you need, including these items:
You must bring in last year’s printed tax returnAll of your tax documentsA photo ID and Social Security cards for yourself and your childrenA list of expenses if you paid for child care, college or vocational trainingA list of medical expenses A list of charitable donationsA blank check to receive your refund via direct deposit, should you be eligible for one.
Tax-Aide volunteers will help clients on a first-come, first-served basis.
