Set in contemporary Zimbabwe, follow the life of a young boy from the age of eight with his big dreams, excitement and hopes for his own future and that of his family and his developing country.

Gideon J Wabvuta | Zimbabwe

Set against the background of a nation struggling to find its democratic foundations, his dream of being a lawyer, a bomb-maker, a diplomatic journalist, a poltical activist and a loving son are all thwarted as he wakes up to a nation convulsing under domestic and international pressures. The revolution against the white oppressor has been victorious. But who have been the beneficiaries of that victory? The people? The government? The demogoue?

As the young boy slowly transforms into young man, he also transforms from being a passive viewer of his community to an active participant as he sets out to help rectify the causes of his fractured nation. He finds himself caught up in the most dramatic and disturbing political turmoil that threatens both his family and his own conscience in the most unexpected and surprising ways.

MBARE DREAMS sets a young African man on a course where his moral choices are challenged, where the personal and political collide, where sacrifices are demanded and the future is at stake. Come along on this journey of awakening and activism.

Playwright Gideon Wabvuta brings universal truths to the stage

Gideon Wabvuta

“For the longest time I had been trying to understand … how people change and where is that exact moment when you wake up and realize, 'Oh God, things are bad now.' That's one of the things I was wondering in my life—when did things really start getting bad in Zimbabwe? That made me write the story.” Gideon Wabvuta, a playwright and actor, wondered these things aloud as we talked over the phone, he in California, I in Albuquerque. He seeks the answers to these questions as he unpacks his personal history and the history of his home country in Mbare Dreams, a semi-autobiographical solo performance that will make its local debut at this year's Revolutions International Theatre Festival, sponsored by Tricklock Company.
