Straight Outta Oz

“Is you a good witch? Or just a bad bitch?”

I need to tell you something, readers. In the past, I may have been known to dislike musicals … It never mattered what genre of music they focused on, who was in it or how good the dancing was, I hated musicals. More often than not, I've found them campy, unoriginal and boring. After watching Straight Outta Oz, something happened to me. I'm not sure when—was is seeing the grandiose costumes and makeup? The flawless choreography? All of the gorgeously talented vocalists and variety of music? I'm not sure, but by the end of the first song, I was swaying, and by the last song I was full-on dancing. After becoming a changed woman, I need to share this with you: the marvelous, extraordinary and awe-inspiring world-class performer Todrick Hall is bringing his musical/visual album to the National Hispanic Cultural Center this Monday, May 1.

Inspired by the classic tale of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Todrick originally based and created this concept album on his journey from his small hometown in Texas to his rise to fame is LA. The album (and deluxe version) feature Nicole Scherzinger, Perez Hilton, Raven-Symoné, Bob the Drag Queen, Jordin Sparks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Alaska Thunderfuck, Laganja Estranja, Kim Chi, Mariah Balenciaga, Willam Belli, RuPaul and so many more that we literally don't have the space to print them all.

Straight Outta Oz is composed with a multitude of genres from trap to pop to country to R&B—I know that sounds iffy but trust me, the way Hall put this masterpiece together is as inconceivably lovely as it is entertaining. You can see this show for just $32 and, in addition to seeing the show, you can meet and take photos with this prodigious man for $62. (Megan Reneau)
