2 NM AUTHORS DO STORYTIME READINGS FOR PAGE ONE'S CELEBRATION OF "CHILDREN'S BOOK WEEK" ON SAT, MAY 6
Page One Books will be participating in the nationwide "Children's Book Week" event with two New Mexico authors -- Karen Glinski and Caroline Starr Rose -- reading to children on Saturday, May 6.
These two authors will be doing storytime readings from their own books for about an hour each, starting at 1:00 pm on May 6. Glinski's children's books include "Danger at the Rodeo" and "Stranded at Sheep Camp." Rose's children's books include "Over in the Wetlands" (a picture book) and the recently released "Jasper and the Riddle of Riley's Mine."
Glinski will be reading at 1:00 pm, and Rose will read at 2:30 pm that Saturday.
Children’s Book Week is the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading. Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Every year, events are held nationwide at schools, libraries, bookstores, homes — wherever young readers and books connect. The 98th anniversary of Children’s Book Week will take place May 1-7, 2017. Book Week will open a dramatic new chapter in 2017 with an increased number of events, reformatted book awards, new websites, original materials and artwork, and more.
The event's official website states, "Children’s Book Week originated in the belief that children’s books and literacy are life-changers. In 1913, Franklin K. Matthiews, the librarian of the Boy Scouts of America, began touring the country to promote higher standards in children’s books. He proposed creating a Children’s Book Week, which would be supported by all interested groups: publishers, booksellers, and librarians. Mathiews enlisted two important allies: Frederic G. Melcher, the visionary editor of Publishers Weekly who believed that “a great nation is a reading nation,” and Anne Carroll Moore, the Superintendent of Children’s Works at the New York Public Library and a major figure in the library world. With the help of Melcher and Moore, in 1916, the American Booksellers Association and the American Library Association sponsored a Good Book Week with the Boy Scouts of America. In 1944, the newly-established Children’s Book Council assumed responsibility for administering Children’s Book Week. In 2008, Children’s Book Week moved from November to May. At that time, the administration of Children’s Book Week, including planning official events and creating original materials, was transferred to Every Child a Reader, CBC’s charitable arm. "
Born in Yokohama, Japan, Glinski grew up the oldest of six children in a military family. She majored in Anthropology at UNM where she formed a life-long interest in the Native American cultures of the Southwest. Karen shares her Albuquerque home with two miniature dachshunds, Mr. Bojangles and Wee Willie Winkie. A retired hot-air balloon pilot, Karen currently spends her time working, writing and training her doxies in rally and scent discrimination.
Rose spent her childhood in the deserts of Saudi Arabia and New Mexico, camping at the Red Sea in one and eating red chile in the other. As a girl she danced ballet, raced through books, composed poetry on an ancient typewriter, and put on magic shows in a homemade cape. She's taught both social studies and English in New Mexico, Florida, Virginia, and Louisiana. In her classroom, she worked to instill in her students a passion for books, an enthusiasm to experiment with words, and a curiosity about the past. She lives in New Mexico with her husband and two sons.
