66th ANNUAL TRADITIONAL SPANISH MARKET &
¡VIVA LA CULTURA!
presented by the
SPANISH COLONIAL ARTS SOCIETY
July 24-30, 2017
The Spanish Colonial Arts Society is proud to announce the 66thAnnual Traditional Spanish Market on the historic Santa Fe Plaza on July 29-30, 2017.
Approximately 250 Spanish Colonial Artists from New Mexico and Southern Colorado will take part in this enchanting event, bringing to downtown Santa Fe a critical mass of exponents of woodcarving, tinwork, colcha, hide painting, retablos, straw appliqué, furniture and furnishings, weaving, jewelry, filigree, pottery and ironwork.
The Spanish Colonial Arts Society is based in Santa Fe, NM, and has extended the footprint for Spanish Markets in New Mexico with venues in Albuquerque (Winter Market) and Las Cruces. Society was founded in 1925 with the mission of preserving, promoting and educating the public regarding the historical and contemporary Spanish Colonial Art traditions of New Mexico. The first market took place near the Santa Fe Plaza in 1926.
The Spanish Colonial Art of New Mexico features authentic artistic traditions which can be traced directly back over 400 years. Skilled artists and craftspeople create these breathtaking expressions of a living tradition, and many of them count their art as their only source of income. Styles and quality are very different and far more exacting in terms of traditional accuracy and finish than tourist pieces commonly sold elsewhere. All Adult Market artists are juried into the Market and the youth are mentored by current Market artists in their categories.
¡Viva La Cultura!, a week of truly immersive experiences around Santa Fe, offers lecture series, tours, music, culinary events, movies and more through cooperative activities with other Santa Fe organizations culminating with the Spanish Market, July 29-30, 2017. Music and performances will be on the Market stage throughout the weekend as well as a food court of local flavors. Artist demonstrations, interactive art projects, books on Hispanic culture and a special Market Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi will all be a part of the weekend event. Be sure not to miss Market Preview Friday evening, July 29th, to be the first to view the award-winning artwork for 2017 and meet our exceptional Market artists.
We are most grateful to our generous partners and sponsors who have helped to make this market a reality, including Heritage Hotels and Resorts/Eldorado Hotel & Spa; Santa Fe Arts Commission, New Mexico True and New Mexico Arts
