Artist, poet and photographer Julie Suzanne Brokken shows four life-affirming installations inspired by witnessing her mother’s luminous spirit pass with her last exhale. Runs through 5/30.

The Source hosts BREATH: An Art Experience IN & OUT of Doors by artist-poeta-photographer, Julie Suzanne Brokken.  The solo exhibit is comprised of four life-affirming installations sparked in large part by the artist’s experience of witnessing her mother’s luminous spirit pass with her last exhale.  Collectively, they are a celebration of life and a journey through love and grief— an exploration of the poignant, precarious beauty and ceaseless creativity of Mother Earth and the All-That-Is.  BREATH is a spinning, floating, moving meditation on Great Mystery’s ongoing life-death-life cycles.

The indoor installation, “Spirit/Flame”, gives form to Spirit.   Suspended like prayer flags, seventeen mixed media paper collage constructions float on gold Chinese tea chest paper.  Playing off a reverse of the Joss paper (also known as ghost money) format, the artist has used controlled burns to create shapes and open spaces in the paper.   Smoke and matchstick charcoal become additional drawing mediums.  Sparklers and glitter add their own playful, symbolic elements as the pieces move from cathartic to celebratory, profound to playful.

Prayer flags feature in two of the outdoor installations—“Prayer Flag Moon”, a series of photographs on fabric; and “Enlightened Laundry,” a clothesline of text embroidered dish towels.

The fourth aspect of BREATH is comprised of four assemblage sculptures, collectively titled “Spirit Artifacts”.  Each has an interactive prayer wheel component.  Yes, you can touch this art! Note there will be few other interactive surprises, too.
