Boy Knife in Burque • 少年ナイフ
Here's an interesting bit of rock history for you to think about before you head on over to one of the best and most badass shows to come our town's way in a little while. Shonen Knife doesn't make J-Pop and were never really part of that tentacled arm of Pacific Rim rock. In case you wanna know, they began their DIY punk activities in the early '80s, and their formation can be traced to Euro- and American punks like the Buzzcocks and the Ramones, but not to Nishi Nippori popsters like Princess Princess. In any case, you can get an earful, an eyeful and a head full of their heady, heated sometimes humorous punk proclamations when they gig at the Launchpad on Monday, May 22. Before you go to this once-in-a-lifetime-like event, feel free to check out my favorite tune by the band, a number called “Tortoise Brand Pot Scrubbing Cleaner's Theme.” The trio's on their USA Ramen Adventure Tour and local luminaries Prism Bitch and Crime Lab open this 21+, $13 completely cray concert.
