New Mexico's African American Legacy: Visible, Vital and Valuable

A pictorial history of the African Americans who were brought or ventured to the territory of New Mexico and then became cowboys, traders, miners, railroad workers, entrepreneurs, teachers and more.

The Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico in collaboration with the African American Museum & Cultural Center of New Mexico cordially invite you to the Opening Reception for a new exhibition, New Mexico's African American Legacy: Visible, Vital and Valuable, Sunday, June 4, 2017, from 2-4 p.m.  The exhibition will run through Fall 2017.

The exhibition is a pictorial history of the African Americans who have been in the territory of New Mexico since the Spaniards came with African slaves.  African Americans migrated to the state seeking greater freedoms and opportunities and they employed their skills as cowboys, trappers, traders, explorers, miners, railroad workers, servants, entrepreneurs, teachers and skilled workers.  

The African American history is filled with richness, dignity, persistence, faith and perseverance that provided many contributions to New Mexico's history.
