In honor of the bold balloon flight of S.A. Andrée
Tuesday, July 11, 2017, is the 120th Anniversary of the Bold Flight of S.A. Andrée
When the bold flight of S.A. Andrée began on July 11, 1897, no one had yet reached the North Pole. There had been other attempts, all unsuccessful, but this expedition intended to fly there by balloon from Danes Island, an icy outpost at nearly the top of the world.
To commemorate this important anniversary, the Balloon Museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (free admission after 5 p.m.) so that guests may visit our groundbreaking special exhibition, The Bold Flight of S.A. Andrée.
During the day, guided tours of Arctic Air will be offered at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Exhibit-related crafts - ideal for children and families - will also be available to participate in from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Weather permitting, our radio-controlled balloon, Wind Twister, will be flown on our north grounds at approximately 9:30 a.m.
A fascinating and free evening lecture, Jules Verne: Polar Prophet, begins at 7:00 p.m.
