The Piñata Exhibit Opening Reception

Taking It On the Chin

via Wikicommons

Being a pacifist doesn't come naturally. Whether we like it or not, the human race is as violent and ugly as any animal, and if we don't find ways to vent that ugliness, then it could result in some awful circumstances. Now, some people will tell you to take up sports or martial arts to blow off some of that steam, but I prefer hitting piñatas. Because candy comes out. The National Hispanic Cultural Center is celebrating the art of the piñata (probably for different reasons entirely) with The Piñata Exhibit (Sure to be a Smash Hit!), featuring traditional and contemporary versions of the art form. Bring the family to the free opening reception this Friday, June 23, from 6-8pm at the NHCC, and learn about the historical and social importance of these oft-beaten works of art. (Joshua Lee)

Traditional, iconic and contemporary piñata artists illustrate how piñatas maintain historical and social importance while reflecting transnational shifts in popular culture.

The Piñata Exhibit (Sure to be a Smash Hit!) celebrates this popular art form with over 175 examples from Mexico, Calif., Ariz., Nev., Texas and N.M. Traditional and iconic works, alongside creations by contemporary piñata artists, illustrate how piñatas maintain their historical and social importance while also reflecting transnational shifts in popular, political, and visual culture.
