A competition for youths in honor of the great jazz pianist and composer who grew up in Albuquerque.

As part of the John Aaron Lewis Legacy Project, in partnership with the African American Performing Arts Center, New Mexico Jazz Workshop, the South Broadway Cultural Center (SBCC), and the City of Albuquerque Cultural Services Department, the New Mexico Jazz Festival will host the First Youth Jazz Piano Competition in honor of the great jazz pianist and composer, John Aaron Lewis who grew up in Albuquerque, and graduated from both Albuquerque High and the University of New Mexico.

He went on to international renown as a performer, composer, and educator and as a founder of the Modern Jazz Quartet. He died in 2001 at age 81. Shortly thereafter, the South Broadway Cultural Center auditorium was named the John Lewis Theater. The competition is open to all home schooled, private or public, middle and high school students. Participants will be asked to play two pieces- one by John Lewis and one of their own choosing- both including improvisation. Judges are pianists Jim Ahrend, John Rangel, and Calvin Appleberry. The competition winner will open the New Mexico Jazz Festival concert by the Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet on July 27 at the South Broadway Cultural Center/John Lewis Auditorium as part of the 4th Annual John Lewis Celebration. FREE!

The John Aaron Lewis Legacy Project is supported in part by a grant from the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund of the City of Albuquerque
