Late in his career, composer Ludwig van Beethoven began composing sacred music, as opposed to the strictly secular stuff he had written previously. In the tradition of other late baroque and then early classical composers like Haydn, Beethoven wrote the Mass in C Major in 1807. It's a work marked by the influence of Haydn, especially in the fugue at the end of the third movement. All together, the ethereal piece, scored for a full chorus, orchestra and soloists, is one of Ludwig van's most sublime yet uplifting—it's in C Major, after all—commentaries on humankind's relationship with God. You, dear reader can get a load of this awesome classical expression when Quintessence: Choral Artists of the Southwest present Quintessence 5th Annual Choral Concert with over 100 voices and a live orchestra performing Beethoven’s Mass in C Major at 3pm on Sunday, July 30, at St. John’s United Methodist Church.
