Holding Moments Still
Let's support one another in subverting the dominant gender paradigm by heading to Santa Fe and photographer April Hartford's exploration of gender performance, identity and dissonance at her studio (of the selfsame name—April Hartford Studio). Hartford's solo show, Transgender: One Person's Journey documents in rich black-and-white photographs, different moments during her transition, which illumine a psychological journey as much as a physical one. There will be a formal reception from 1-7pm on Saturday, July 29, but if you miss out, the show will be up until Oct. 7. Admission is free. (Maggie Grimason)

In a groundbreaking solo show, photographer April Hartford leads viewers into an immersive exploration of gender dissonance and transition. Transgender: One Person’s Journey is a multimedia exhibition that revolves around Hartford’s black-and-white fine art photographs, nude self-portraits made at key phases during her transition from male to female—from Justin to April. The images are more metaphorical than explicit, portraying the inner psychological journey as much as the outer one.
Hartford will give artist's talks at 2 and 5:30 p.m. The exhibition runs through October 7 from 1–6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays and by appointment.
