An expert instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and world traveler, award-winning vocalist Leni Stern performs live.

FlyerAn expert instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and world traveler, Leni Stern is an artist who defies expectations. The winner of five consecutive Gibson Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year awards, her music features her trademark inventive guitar playing and vocal explorations along with the indigenous sounds of accomplished African instrumentalists and singers. Her latest album, Dakar Suite (2016), was described as "a celebration of sorts, a triumph of a life lived fully that inspires both dancing and quiet thought, and offers many glimpses into the travels that brought her to this point in her musical life." Last in New Mexico for the 2015 New Mexico Jazz Festival, Stern returns with her trio. In addition to Stern on vocals, electric guitar, and n'goni, the trio features, from Senegal,  Mamadou Ba on electric bass; and Alioune Faye on djembe and calabash.

Electric guitars can be used to make jazz music. Once you get used to that, it’s not a far stretch to believe the match grip is not a drummers only stick-holding choice. But that’s a whole different story. I wanna emphasize jazz guitar here by suggesting an expedition to the Outpost (210 Yale Blvd SE) on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 14. That’s when the legendary Leni Stern Trio plays Burque. She’s a complex, inventive guitarist who had a band with Bill Frisell, worked as a session player and scholar of West African music and developed into one of this century’s most innovative and thoughtful wielders of the axe. Now she digs the n’goni too. $20 to 25 • All Ages • 7:30pm
