Bring Back the Balkans

Celebrating Halloween in the Balkans by dancing to Balkan music may seem like an exotic fantasy—who knows what kind of ghosts other supernatural beings lurk in the fog-shrouded valleys surrounding Vrashka Chuka after all—but you always have your imagination … and Winning Coffee Co. and the 21st annual Balkan Halloween Bash on Saturday, Oct. 28, to help you out with the details of that blazing journey into the night. Organizer Beth Cohen, yet another gem of a local musician who came up at UNM's music school, says the yearly event draws folks of all sorts, from costumed kids to aging hipsters. The awesome hardwood floor at Winning makes a great dance floor, too she added. The evening's festivities revolve around the band Goddess of Arno, which specializes in interpreting the music of Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, inflecting each keen rendition with saucy danceability and expert musicianship. The band's on at 7:45, but come early and learn some traditional dances from 7:15pm until showtime; admission is just $5 and kids under 13 are free.
