Locals learn more about the cancer that strikes about one in seven men during their lifetime.

PosterNew Mexico’s annual all-day conference about prostate cancer will be held Saturday, November 4 at Sandia Prep, 532 Osuna Rd. NE. The time is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is an opportunity for men or women interested in learning more about this cancer, which strikes about one in seven men during their lifetime.

This year’s theme is “What’s Next for Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment.”

In addition to a stage-setting review about the history of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, there will be talks about scanning tools.

Also scheduled is a panel discussion about risk assessment approaches.

Much of the afternoon will offer an opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with a New Mexico-based urologist, oncologist, or radiologist.

Prostate cancer, which often presents no symptoms, is very treatable if diagnosed early. But, that requires, as a first step, making sure men and their doctors talk about the importance of regular screening.

About one in seven men will get prostate cancer in their lifetimes. Recent statistics show that about 1,300 New Mexico men are diagnosed each year with prostate cancer. Most are at least 55 years old; however, men much younger are not immune.
