Jon Gagan Electric Transit Band

You Go, Gagan!

Jon Gagan is a New Mexico bassist who spent the early part of his career gigging in Burque, if memory serves. More clearly, Gagan's proficiency as a jazzer with eclectic influences led him to a prolific career as a sideman, particularly for the group led by German composer Ottmar Liebert. Gagan has also worked with the likes of Milt Jackson and Eddie Harris, mixing it up seriously with a host of divergent genres while playing some great music. Gagan's work as a composer for symphony orchestra has seen sold out performances and he's also released three solo albums. On Thursday, Dec. 7, he'll be gigging at Outpost Performance Space with an ensemble named the Jon Gagan Electric Transit Band. Besides Gagan, the sextet includes Kanoa Kaluhiwa on tenor sax, Bert Dalton on keyboards, Pat Malone on guitar, and Eddie Garcia and Mark Clark handling sticks and percussion, respectively. For between $15 to $20, this recital should fairly rock.

Longtime Ottmar Liebert bassist, Jon Gagan debuts his latest project melding jazz, world, pop and funk styles into a distinctive sound all his own.

Tonight at The Outpost, New Mexico native and longtime Ottmar Liebert bassist, Jon Gagan debuts his latest project as a leader. A prolific and eclectic composer/arranger, Gagan draws on his experience as sideman for Liebert and a host of other artists including Emily Remler, Milt Jackson, and Eddie Harris, to meld jazz, world, pop, and funk styles into a distinctive sound all his own. He has released three albums on the SSRI label— Transit, Transit 2, and Transit 3: Migration. In 2015, Gagan scored a full-length symphony that was performed to a sellout crowd at Popejoy Hall by Ottmar Liebert’s trio with the New Mexico Philharmonic. Tonight’s concert will feature music from his soon-to-be-recorded album, Electric. Joining Gagan will be Kanoa Kaluhiwa, tenor saxophone; Bert Dalton, keyboards; Pat Malone, guitar; Eddie Garcia, drums; and Mark Clark, percussion.
