HOLIDAY BACKPACK PARTY DATE CHANGED: SOLICITING NEW COATS FOR BOYS AND GIRLS WHO ARE REFUGEES, IMMIGRANTS AND AT RISK LOCAL YOUTH
I am asking media help to solicit and secure 100 new coats all sizes and for girls and boys for Backpack party to be held at the La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper Avenue, NE on Saturday January 13 2018 from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. We are inviting up to 60 at risk youth who have not received any gifts and have no chance of receiving any to come to this party to have fun, eat, dance, play word games and make new friends. Potential attendees are asked to bring backpacks with homework inside. I mentioned 100 coats because some youth may invite themselves or be brought by others.. To learn about the rationale for the backpack party please visit this link: http://www.kob.com/albuquerque-news/charter-school-immigrant-refugee-students/4688743/
Since 2007 my husband and I have observed how some of the refugee youth do not do well in school and started a Read To Excel tutoring programming with help of the Albuquerque Academy students since 2013 on Saturdays. We observed through our choir practises and Saturday enrichment program that while some of the children may speak a little English they cannot read and have been attending school for 2 years. Some report being given A's in school for work that they did not do with some not getting the homework or help they need from some of the teachers.
Coats and gift cards: Each youth who come to the party will receive a new coat. All the youth who come to the center with a backpack and agree to a reading assessment by a volunteer will receive a $20.00 gift card and a new coat.
We need 100 coats at $15.00 per coat = $1,500.00. ( we will need to buy around 100 coats because other uninvited youth may come) ; We also need $20.00 gift cards to give to those who bring backpacks. Left over coats will be taken to the schools to serve needy children.
Our 100% volunteer driven non profit with a 501 c (3) status Immigrant and Refugee Resource Village of Albuquerque and its flagship program New Mexico Women's Global Pathways receives no government funding and struggles to secure grants money. We have raised $550 pver 27 days through an ongoing gofundme campaign, which is very slow.
Can you please help us get donations of new coats please? visit this link to see the rationale for the Holiday back pack party.
