A Friends of Coronado Historic Site lecture by author, Dennis Herrick,

When Pueblo Indians say, “The first white man our people saw was a black man,” they are referring to Esteban, who came to New Mexico in 1539.  After centuries of negative portrayals, Dennis Herrick’s new biography highlights Esteban’s importance in America’s early history.  Herrick will introduce us to his research and insights into the life and times of Esteban, an African slave who landed in the New World as a shipwreck survivor, who went on to interact with the native population across the South and Southwest, earning their trust and respect as a cultural linguist.
