Prolific jazz composer, pianist and bandleader Amina Figarova brings her stylings along with five other acclaimed musicians.

One of the most prolific jazz composers, pianists and bandleaders coming out of Europe, Amina Figarova was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, where she began playing piano and composing at an early age. She studied classical piano at the Baku Conservatory before concentrating on jazz at the Rotterdam Conservatory (where she met her husband, flutist Bart Platteau) and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1998, she and Platteau were invited to the Thelonious Monk Institute’s summer jazz colony in Aspen, CO and after more than a decade of bookings in major U.S. jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals, the couple moved to NYC.  Figarova’s original compositions span the entire range of jazz and JazzTimes classified Figarova as “... among the most important composers to come into jazz in the new millennium...” Her compositions “Pictures” and “The Traveler” were commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center for its 2014-15 New Jazz Standards series and her latest recording, Blue Whisper, released in 2015, was described as “another beautiful musical journey of discovery, admiration, sensitivity and reflection.” Recognized for their “remarkable chemistry that brings her detailed arrangements to life, the Amina Figarova Sextet has played major festivals including the Newport Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The sextet features Marc Mommaas, tenor sax; Bart Platteau, flutes; Jason Brown, drums; with trumpet and bass TBA.
