Kaki King

King of the Wild Frontier

Courtesy of artist

Kaki King is an acclaimed singer-songwriter who has worked with luminaries like The Mountain Goats and Timbaland. An insider's insider whose legendary chops include a complex finger-picking style and slap-bass style playing, King has recently moved on to important work as a soundtrack composer; her work on Sean Penn's Into the Wild was nominated for a Golden Globe award. She's also refining her role as a visionary; her new solo work combines performance art and intense visual elements projected onto her axe, turning the instrument into an “ontological tabula rosa in a creation myth unlike any other.” Yow, that definitely sounds like something local listeners on a quest for the unusual best should check out. King performs her new work, The Neck is the Bridge to the Body, at Outpost Performance Space on Sunday, April 1, at 7:30pm. Tickets range in price from $20 to $50. (August March)

She combines unusual tunings, complex fingerstyle picking and slap bass techniques to create soundscapes that range from instrumental acoustic work to high-voltage rock songs.

"In her near-13-year career that's seen six studio albums and a Golden Globe nomination for best original score, King has earned critical acclaim for the way she combines unusual tunings, complex fingerstyle picking, and slap bass techniques to create soundscapes that range from instrumental acoustic work to high-voltage rock songs. Now, she's using her guitar in an entirely new way: as a projection screen."

Her latest work, "The Neck Is A Bridge To The Body," is Kaki at her visionary best: deconstructing and redefining the role of solo instrumental artist though virtuoso technique, insatiable imagination, and boundless humanity. This groundbreaking new multi-media performance uses projection mapping to present the guitar as an ontological tabula rasa in a creation myth unlike any other, where luminous visions of genesis and death, textures and skins, are cast onto her signature Ovation Adamas guitar which has been customized specifically for this production.
