PIXELS & PAINT: “Las Cruces”

Exhibition Highlights Crosses of New Mexico

Santa Fe, NM, March 6, 2018 — “Las Cruces,” an exhibition by two Santa Fe artists—painter Ricardo Gutierrez and photographer Thomas Dodge—explores the iconography of crosses in New Mexico. The collaborative show previews at Gallery 1680, 714B Calle Grillo in Santa Fe, Easter Sunday, April 1, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., serving brunch favorites. The exhibition runs through Mother’s Day, May 13. The public is invited to an opening reception, Friday, April 6, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Regular hours at Gallery 1680 are 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., seven days a week.

“Las Cruces” is the first in a series of Pixels & Paint-themed exhibitions by Ricardo and Dodge scheduled for Gallery 1680. Ricardo’s brilliant acrylic paintings portray fields of crosses against the New Mexico landscape and color. Dodge’s photographs depict images of crosses from such historic sites as Santa Fe’s San Miguel Chapel and Chimayo Sanctuario and other settings.

“Painting is like storytelling…a blank canvas is most exciting,” says Ricardo. “Somewhere I learned that the most important aspect of being an artist is to just paint. Then trust the practice to lead you along the path. I remember placing the first cross in one of my paintings, that later became known as ‘Po’Pay’s Rebellion,’ which has led to more than eight years of cross paintings.”

“My photos in the ‘Las Cruces’ exhibition,” adds Dodge, “Are in the genre of reportage, which reflects my background in photojournalism. I like to think Ricardo’s and my images are soulful emanations of the importance of crosses in everyones’ lives.” Dodge focuses his work primarily on the form and light of the Southwestern landscape. He currently is photographing the region’s national parks and monuments.
