Dave Payne is a songwriter based in Albuquerque. He performs rock & roll and honky tonk music with his band Salt Cedar.

Dave Payne Will Not Admit Defeat, his breakout album of original tunes performed with a half dozen of NM’s finest musicians, was released in 2015 to critical acclaim. The 2018 followup record Salt Cedar is all original tunes again, showcasing his newest batch of songs and the talents of his band: Cory Minefee- bass (Saltine Ramblers), Cheese- drums (Pherkad), Dave Devlin- pedal steel & telecaster electric guitar (Higher Ground).

The songs Dave writes try their best to be diverse, to leave room for listener’s personal takes on the tunes- while also having a touch of humor. Bitter Pints Sweet Memories is a tale in the classic honky tonk style, but set in the micro breweries that dominate the NM scene. Oso Corridor started as a landscape poem about the Sandias in fall; the band set Dave’s folky strumming on his gut string guitar to an afro-beat with a hawaiian steel solo. And Transformation is a song about the internal struggle about being true to yourself, full of self contradictions and doubt.

Dave Payne had a 10 year tenure in electric stringband the Saltine Ramblers, recording 2 albums (Arroyo Borealis, You Know That New Sound You’re Looking For?) and logging hundreds of regional performances. He’s also performed on albums by Russel James Pyle, 3 String Bale, Silver String Band and Leeches of Lore, and has gigged with dozens of other artists. He’s been a proud member of NM’s strong americana scene, participating in picking circles, songwriter showcases and going to live performances by his contemporaries.
