Learn the history of the Petroglyphs from volunteers with a working knowledge of the park.

Since 2008, volunteer crews averaging 3-5 people have entered designated Valles Caldera National Preserve areas to locate and document historic dendroglyphs (tree carvings) found on aging aspen trees and snags.  Carvings include a very few left from the 1890's.  Names, initials, home locations, dates, and even human figures, religious symbols, horses, and birds appear.  The survey is racing against time, animal damage, and nature.  Wildfire has burned seven of ten surveyed areas. Suggested donation of $5.
