If It Ain't Baroque, Don't Fix It

Ballet. We have preconceived notions of what it is and what we expect to see. OK—picture that. Now, throw it out the window. People are making strides in the art and doing incredible things with it. Sometimes, that means taking the old—very oldand adapting something new. The New York Baroque Dance Company, a leading force in the revival of 18th century ballet, brings the Ballet of the Seven Planets Workshop. The New Mexico Ballet hosts the five-day workshop from Monday, July 23 through Friday, July 27 from 9:30am to 12:30pm daily. Dancers 13 and older may take all of the classes for a flat cost of $150 thanks to partial funding from The Dance Preservation Fund. Learn re-imagined ballet choreography from the time of Louis XIV of France. Fun fact: King Louis, who also danced in the style, started the first Royal Ballet Academy in the Western world in 1661.

Learn traditional Baroque ballet from the time of Louis the XIV sponsored by the Dance Preservation Fund.

The Dance Preservation Fund has honored me by partially supporting a workshop, Ballet of the Seven Planets, which I am conducting from July 23-27 in Albuquerque. I am a choreographer and I am using this workshop as an experimental lab to test my ideas about early ballet choreography at the time of Louis XIV of France who established the first Royal Ballet Academy in the world in 1661.

In the workshop I will teach early ballet technique and re-imagine the choreography for the Ballet of the Seven Planets, a court ballet in which Louis XIV, himself, danced.

The New Mexico Ballet is sending at least seven of their dancers to the workshop. However, I would like to open this work to a larger body of dancers as we could use "stars" in addition to the planets.

The Dance Preservation Fund financial support means I can offer this 5 day workshop to students 13 and older for a low tuition of $150.
