Featuring his colorful cutting boards, trays, candleholders, earring racks, tables and more.

Life has a way of bringing us full circle. David Johnson learned his “love of wood” from his Grandfather at an early age. After an illness forced him to retire as an ER Doctor he  built a woodworking shop in Placitas, his home of thirty-five years and rekindled his love of woodworking. After more than two decades working in his studio, Johnson is an accomplished woodworker with a large following.

David Johnson is August's featured artist at Wild Hearts Gallery. The public is invited to the opening reception on Saturday, August 11, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. featuring his colorful cutting boards, trays, candleholders, earring racks, tables and more. Light refreshments will be served. Wild Hearts Gallery is located in Placitas, at the Homestead Village, 221-B State Highway 165, 2 ½ miles from I-25.

Designed to be functional as well as beautiful, his pieces often mix many different types of hardwoods together. What we might call a flaw in a piece of wood, Johnson calls an opportunity to add an inlay of turquoise or other material to enhance the beauty of the wood.

In the interview, he told us “Woodworking allows me a creative way to express myself. I enjoy working with exotic woods such as Ebony, Purple Heart, and Olive Wood because of the variety in their color and grain. Each of my pieces is individually hand crafted and unique”.

Wild Hearts Gallery is an artists' collective, supported by 14 longtime local artists.  They are painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, woodworkers, glass, fiber, and mosaic artists, who are committed to sharing with others the many ways they create. Wild Hearts Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
