NM AUTHORS CELEBRATE DEBUT SCI-FI EFFORTS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, AT PAGE ONE BOOKS
Albuquerque author Lauren C. Teffeau and northern New Mexico author Rebecca Roanhorse join forces 4:00 pm Saturday, September 15, to celebrate releases of their debut science-fiction novels at Page One Books. Teffeau is promoting "Implanted," while Roanhorse's first novel in a series is "Trail of Lightning: The Sixth World Book 1."
Teffeau's novel is described as such: "The data stored in her blood can save a city on the brink... or destroy it, in this gripping cyberpunk thriller. When college student Emery Driscoll is blackmailed into being a courier for a clandestine organisation, she's cut off from the neural implant community which binds the domed city of New Worth together. Her new employers exploit her rare condition which allows her to carry encoded data in her blood, and train her to transport secrets throughout the troubled city. New Worth is on the brink of Emergence - freedom from the dome - but not everyone wants to leave. Then a data drop goes bad, and Emery is caught between factions: those who want her blood, and those who just want her dead."
Roanhorse's "Trail of Lightning" is teased as such: "While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters. Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last best hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much more terrifying than anything she could imagine. Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel the rez, unraveling clues from ancient legends, trading favors with tricksters, and battling dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology. As Maggie discovers the truth behind the killings, she will have to confront her past if she wants to survive."
Teffeau lives and dreams in Albuquerque. When she was younger, she poked around in the back of wardrobes, tried to walk through mirrors, and always kept an eye out for secret passages, fairy rings, and messages from aliens. Now, she writes to cope with her ordinary existence. "Implanted" is her first novel, but she also has had stories published in "The Change: Tales of Downfall and Rebirth" and "The Shining Cities: An Anthology of Pagan Science Fiction."
Roanhorse, a speculative fiction writer, won both the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award for Best Short Story ("Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™") in the past four months. She also just won the 2017 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Science Fiction and Fantasy writer. "Trail of Lightning" is the first book in the "Sixth World" series, followed by "Storm of Locusts" in 2019. She lives in northern New Mexico.
