Spend the afternoon with a cemetery historian and photographer and learn to interpret the cryptic symbols and emblems found on grave stones and monuments. Without being able to read a word, or ancestors could tell if the deceased was male or female, was religious, a member of a fraternal organization, well loved (or not), or even had a sense of humor. We will use photos of actual tomb stones taken by the author from all over the world showing hundreds of examples of the "universal language" of graves. We'll also discuss the history of modern cemeteries. A little history, a lot of symbolism, and even some humor.
“Carved in Stone” is a presentation about how to understand the language of old cemetery headstones. Taught by David M. Habben, Taphophile. Plan to bring your own lunch, light refreshments will be provided. Test what you learned at Fairview Cemetery after the class.
