Don't wear a damn toga because this is no frat party. The Albuquerque Grecian Festival brings the non-stereotypical beauty and traditions of Greek culture to the rest of us non-Greeks. The St. George Greek Orthodox Church hosts this year's event once again and even if religion is not your thing, take a tour while at the fest. The church is a work of art. The festival takes place from Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11am to 10pm through Sunday, Oct. 7 from 11am to 5pm. Over the three days, take in the smell of roasting lamb, the sounds of bouzóuki, the sights of colorful dancers while experiencing demos, lessons, jewelry, fine art and more. Ticket costs are a nominal $5 for general admission, $2 for seniors and free admission for active duty military, police, fire, EMT and children under 11. A free park and ride is available at the corner of Lomas and University. (Mayo Lua de Frenchie)

Fêting Greek Life

Immerse yourself in Greek culture—and a prime opportunity for people-watching or peratzatha—at this weekend’s Albuquerque Grecian Festival. The annual fest commences at 11am on Friday, Oct. 6 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church (308 High Street SE) and concludes at 5pm on Sunday, Oct. 7. Sample authentic Greek cuisine, such as spanakópita, dolmádes, pastítsio, souvláki and baklavá, and learn to recreate traditional dishes with on-site cooking lessons. Feast your senses on Greek language lessons, local Greek band Aegean Sounds’ bouzóuki-centric grooves and folkloric dance (from bridal dance kalamatianos to intricate all-male line dance tsamikos). Shop the market for deli goods, religious icons, fine art and clothing and jewelry of Greek and Byzantine design. General admission is $5, seniors pay $2, and military, law enforcement and children 11 or younger get in for free. Visit abqgreekfest.com to learn more.
