Christmastime for Mariachi Music
It's true that just about every culture out there that has Christmas as part of its, uh, cultural fabric makes music about this holy celebration. The Texans and New Mexicans are no different, in that folk music made to shine a light on these auspicious days is part of the lives of not only dancers and musicians but also citizens keen to have a fun time illuminating the end of a dark month with joyous blessings. This year, Popejoy Hall on the UNM campus presents the 20th iteration of it's very popular Mariachi Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3pm. Featuring the ensemble Mariachi Aztlan and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Ballet Folklorico, this yearly performance says “Happy Holidays” in the universal language of music and the cultural traditions of central Nuevo Mexico and western Tejas. C'mon, it'll be more fun than a dozen biscochitos eaten in a stressful frenzy before your mom's jefita arrives for the big day! Tickets range in price from $25 to $62 for this epic journey into the season.
