Pianist Art Lande; woodwind player Bruce Williamson; and guitar and ukulele master Khabu Young– three master improvising composers with decades of playing history together— are giving concerts in Albuquerque, Santa Fe (GIG Performance Space December 7), Colorado Springs, and Boulder in celebration of their forthcoming release Lubbock. As they describe it, the trio “blurs distinctions between chamber/orchestral, written/spontaneous, and the sublime/ridiculous as well as any stylistic suggestions from jazz, blues, rock, 20th century classical, and beyond. The underlying principle is the expansive spirit of freedom and adventure, allowing the stories of the moment to emerge and guide the musical journey.” Lande and Williamson began playing together in the Bay Area during the mid-1970’s as part of Rubisa Patrol while Young and Lande met in the late 80’s and formed the Russian Dragon Band. Williamson came on board a few years later for tours and recording projects, and after moving to NYC in the mid-90’s, Young continued numerous projects with Williamson. As a result of their Pathways To Jazz grant through the Boulder County Arts Alliance, Lande, Williamson and Young recorded nearly three albums worth of original compositions spanning the past five decades. Lubbock is the first release from that session, and there will surely be another to follow!
