Fred Sturm and Friends
A Real Piano Man

Fred Sturm has been the prime piano technician for the University of New Mexico for about 30 years. He can handle the nine foot Steinways in Keller Hall with aplomb, in case you are interested. Of more relevance though is Sturm's profound reputation as a player and researcher. An expert on Latin American music, Sturm specializes in the piano repertoire of the region. The concerts he gives are on the rare side, yet each is memorable for the dude's intricate reach and passionate realization of works that often go unplayed in the Euro-leaning world of art music. Sturm presents a concert featuring the works of Mexican composer Francisco Ibarra on Sunday, March 3 at the Outpost Performance Space at 3pm. This program is rarified indeed as Sturm has chosen Ibarra's sublime Sonata for Two Cellos and Piano for the recital's centerpiece. This marks the first time that the difficult and beautiful work has been performed outside of Mexico. Cellists Lisa Collins and Adrian Brody join in for the Ibarra; there are also compositions by Villa-Lobos and Halffter on the program. Tickets for this all ages event cost between $15 and $20.
