The director of Jazz Studies at UNM, offers a session and discusses how musicians improvise, the different styles of jazz, what makes a jazz standard and more.

Inspired and encouraged by Outpost friend and supporter, Alice Haddix, we have introduced, as part of our Music Appreciation events, which have been offered at Outpost from time to time, a special ongoing series called What Is This Thing Called Jazz. Designed for the lay audience who love jazz but want to understand more about its workings— how do people improvise? what are the different styles of jazz? what is a jazz standard? what is playing over chord changes? and so on. Glenn Kostur, Director of Jazz Studies at UNM, will offer the first session and discuss the issues outlined above and more. Future offerings could talk about specific styles of jazz (Cesar Bauvallet actually did this in a 2013 presentation about Afro-Cuban music; and Tom Guralnick did a presentation on The Avant Garde), the instruments of jazz, the music of specific jazz icons, jazz vocals, and so on. But they will all be designed to explain the workings of jazz to the lay audience (open to all of course).
