Stories on the Sleeve: Connecting with Album Cover Art

Monday June 3, 2019

New Mexico Humanities Council

Albuquerque, NM 87108

In 1938, Alex Steinweiss convinced Columbia Records to allow him to design illustrations for a few album covers. It was a groundbreaking idea. Since Steinweiss, album covers have been the canvas for many designers, photographers, and artists, including Andy Warhol, Phil Stern, David Stone Martin, and Peter Blake. Album cover art served to improve record sales and became a profound extension of the music inside its embrace. For many people, an album’s imagery is as important and memorable as the music it promotes.

Stories on the Sleeve: Connecting with Album Cover Art is an exhibit showcasing album covers from private collections and personal narratives that describe the album’s significance in the person’s life. Transition, wonder, maturity, mystery, discovery, reflection, and salvation are some of the themes reflected upon in the stories about a record and its album cover.

Join us at the New Mexico Humanities Council on Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 6:00 pm for the opening reception of Stories on the Sleeve: Connecting with Album Cover Art. Exhibitors will share their story and a music track from their featured album. Exhibit partner, Hi-Phy Records, will provide the means to sample tracks.

Stories on the Sleeve: Connecting with Album Cover Art will be on exhibit April 4 – June 21, 2019 at the New Mexico Humanities Council located at 4115 Silver SE, Albuquerque. Gallery visiting hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
