                                  ‘THERE ARE NO MAPS’

For me at this time in my career, and perhaps always, art aligns with the political. It began a few years ago with the huge influx by sea of refugees coming to Italy and then all of Europe. It began by realizing that in my lifetime little has changed, that there are no limits in the struggle between life and death, in the passion to save one’s children. This series speaks to the concept that lines on a map can no longer hold true unless we imprison all those who cross the line unwelcome. Religious and tribal wars, genocide, famine, and waters rising will come to mean that 'there are no maps'. I am a printmaker, and through my monoprints I address these issues in a painterly fashion, sometimes working on transparent silk with an image that melds with the paper print below. As part of this show, I am including poetry by four invited authors so other voices are heard, not necessarily aligned with my work but with the force of the written and spoken word on the challenges presented.
