“First Things: Points, Roots, Impacts” is a multimedia installation comprising found objects, photographs, and texts that pertain to sites at which scientific researchers endeavored to grasp how time and temporality square with human and non-human processes. Items selected for inclusion in the work constellate around themes of scientific dating, measuring time, and the futility of human efforts to control nature and culture.
Fieldworks is an initiative launched by faculty in the School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma. Through extensive study of arid regions in the western United States, it cultivates an archive of objects, images, and texts that form the basis for exhibitions, publications, and teaching. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to the arts, humanities, and sciences, Fieldworks examines how people comprehend and interact with nature, producing knowledge about the traces that our species leaves on the land.
