The concert version of an innovative new opera by Santa Fe composer Janice Simmons will be presented at Temple Beth Shalom on May 5, 2019. Narcissus and Echohad its world premiere at New Mexico Highlands University last October and has never been performed publicly in Santa Fe. The story is based on the Greek tragedy of the beautiful youth Narcissus, who falls in love with himself, and the mountain nymph Echo, who becomes obsessed with her love for him. Simmons’ opera, takes a modern twist on the delusion and suffering in the ancient myth. The forces of nature bring these two characters to a deep awakening, and they find solace away from the pull of ego and desire.
The opera concert, performed without costumes, will feature singers and musicians well known to local music aficionados: soloists Andre Garcia-Nuthmann, Jennifer Perez, and Kelli Dahlke-Fuentes; music director and pianist Luke Gullickson; and flutist Dorothy Bowers Wu. After the performance, there will be a reception with the artists. This special event is in honor of Temple Beth Shalom Rabbi Emeritus Ben Morrow, who died in 2018 at age 90.
