Friday, May 24, Tortuga Gallery, Albuquerque: Songs of Benares - From the River Ganga to the Rio Grande, the kickoff event of Sangeet Millennium's spring 2019 northern New Mexico tour. An authentic world music concert comes to Barelas’s Tortuga Gallery, weaving together classical East Indian vocal, tabla drums, and sitar in the first half, followed by a blend of sax, sitar, and tabla for a fusion sound in the second half, featuring the Dallas-based world music collective Sangeet Millennium Ensemble with guest artists on tour from India. The ensemble’s leader/project director, Dr. Amie Maciszewski, a native of Raton and former Albuquerque resident, has spent her adult life studying, playing, teaching about, and promoting the traditional music and musicians of India, having lived there for over a decade. Tickets on sale now; sponsorship options available.

Part 1. Sangeet Millennium Ensemble - a collective of musicians who fuse non-commercial music of India with jazz and other world music styles, creating elegantly vibrant sounds that are both familiar and exotic. Founded and led by internationally noted sitarist/teaching artist/ethnomusicologist Amie Maciszewski, the Sangeet Millennium Ensemble was selected among the Top Ten Best Performing Bands/World Music 2010-11 in the Austin Chronicle Readers' Poll. With extensive touring (including outreach) and three CDs to their credit, Amie & Sangeet Millennium’s artistic work has received support from the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division (2000-2013) and continues to receive support from Texas Commission on the Arts (since 2008), Mid-America Arts Alliance (since 2010), and the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs (since 2017). To learn more about Amie and Sangeet Millennium and view videos of their work, please visit www.sangeetmillennium.org and www.facebook.com/sangeetmilens

Performing with Dr. Amie on this tour are jazz saxophonist and songwriter Paul Klemperer of Austin, TX (www.pksax.com), and tabla player Uddalak Samanta, on tour from India.

Part 2. Songs of Benares, a performance of North Indian classical music showcasing the simultaneously earthy and spiritual style hailing from the ancient city of Benares, charmingly performed by acclaimed vocalist Rupan Samanta (www.rupansamanta.com), on tour from India, with backup vocals and instrumental interpretations of the repertoire by Dr. Amie on sitar.  Both artists are longtime disciples of the same legendary vocal guru and performer, the late Hindustani vocal diva Girija Devi of Benares. Uddalak Samanta will accompany on tabla.  Here is a link to a track from one of her recent performances:
