The play uses the interwoven monologues of the title character and Hammy to reveal how their lives intersect, how their unspoken thoughts and dark desires propel them to a stunning climax.

Mother Road Theatre Company will be closing its 11th season with the West Coast premiere of Abbie Spallen’s award winning play Pumpgirl. The title character is described as a “tomboy all growed up… who walks like John Wayne and looks like his horse.” She works at a weathered gas station on the “wrong side” of the border in Northern Ireland. She occasionally flirts with Hammy, a regular customer and amateur race car driver. He is the father of two with his bitterly unhappy wife, Sinead.

The play uses their interwoven monologues to reveal how their lives intersect — how their unspoken thoughts and dark desires propel them to a stunning climax. It is a beautiful and bruising story, filled with black humor and blue language,

It only requires three actors and three chairs, but Abbie Spallen’s gifted twist on Irish storytelling steeps the audience in a landscape of gas fumes, country music and lost dreams.

Pumpgirl was first produced and premiered by the Bush Theatre at the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe Festival; it won the 2007 Susan Smith Blackburn Award for best English-language play by a woman and was nominated for the Irish Times Best New Play.

This production brings MRTC’s 11th season ‘home’ in a way, as it is small in scale and big in scope: it only requires three actors and three chairs. However, the audience will be reeling as it mixes the smells of gasoline into an Irish form of storytelling – beautiful but bruising with black humor and blue language — which hearkens to Mother Road’s roots at the Filling Station, where we staged Conor McPherson’s ‘The Weir’ in our first season.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this show is that it features the work of our fiercely talented Mother Road member, Jen Stephenson, making her company directorial debut. She has chosen an all-star cast with Amy Bourque, Amy Suman and Shawn Patrick Boyd.

Pumpgirl opens May 17 and runs through June 2. The play will be performed at the MTS Centre for Theatre, where Mother Road is currently in residence (6320 Domingo Rd NE, Albuquerque NM 87108). Tickets are available online at or by phone at 505-243-0596. Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm.
