Santa Fe’s Sevda Choir returns to the stage for our much-anticipated Spring Concert at the acoustically gorgeous and richly historic San Miguel Mission, Friday May 31st, 7:30pm. The 17-member mixed choir, led by Grammy-Award-winning vocalist Willa Roberts, stretches its legs to perform songs of spring and summer from the Balkans/Eastern Europe, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, the Baltic and the far reaches of Russia in this enchanting evening of song.

The word Sevda stems from the Turkish word for love, which spread throughout the Balkans during the 500-year Ottoman reign. It alludes to love in the deepest and most passionate sense; that which aches or tugs at a person inextricably, an overwhelming yearning or longing, simultaneously leading to feelings of both joy and melancholy. Sevda’s members are compelled by the profound storytelling, tight harmonies, complex rhythms and vocal acrobatics found in this music. The choir will perform spring calling songs, ballads of love, loss, and bliss, tales of resistance and sagas of epic heroes and gods, transporting its audience to another place and time. Join us in discovering commonality across continents on this musical odyssey!
