A multi-generational powerhouse band of hard bop icons plays live.

Tonight’s concert by The Cookers is a special pre-NM Jazz Festival Event! Buy your tickets early! Last time The Cookers were at Outpost in 2014, they sold out two nights in a flash! A multi-generational powerhouse band of hard bop icons, The Cookers was founded by acclaimed trumpeter David Weiss, and also features tenor saxophonist Billy Harper (veteran of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers); New Orleans based alto-saxophonist Donald Harrison (known as “the King of Nouveau Swing”); trumpeter Eddie Henderson, (who gained fame as part of Herbie Hancock’s electric Mwandishi group); pianist George Cables (one of jazz’s most enduring composers/pianists); bass legend Cecil McBee; and iconic drummer, Billy Hart. This all-star ensemble has released five critically acclaimed recordings, including Time and Time Again, which was the iTunes Jazz CD of the year in 2014, and their more recent, The Call of the Wild and Peaceful Heart which offers “fresh, challenging, boundary-pushing music.” Each member of The Cookers has led numerous of their own groups and each has a keenly individual sound; but it is the unmistakable power of their teamwork that makes their music so commanding. Combined, the group has over 250 years of experience in the jazz world and has been a part of over 1,000 recordings. It is impossible to not feel the collective weight of that experience in their recordings and live performances.
