Santa Fe based vocalist Barbara Bentree describes herself as a “storyteller” - a vocalist, writer and filmmaker. She and her husband, pianist John Rangel, who accompanies her tonight, produced last year’s wonderful film, Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time, part of which was presented at the Lensic as part of the 2018 New Mexico Jazz Festival. Tonight, she presents her signature “All About the Words” music featuring songs that are both provocative and evocative. Bentree notes that the songs are designed to deliver important ideas within Rangel’s intimate piano orchestrations. The John Rangel Quintet features Rangel on piano; J.Q. Whitcomb, trumpet; Sean Johnson, saxophone; Cyrus Campbell, bass; and Paul Palmer III, drums. They will perform a preview of the original compositions by Rangel for an upcoming CD project titled Darkness to Light. Originally from New York, John Rangel spent several years in LA where he immersed himself in the Leimert Park or (“African Greenwich Village”) scene which had a major influence on his musical direction. Over the years, he has explored a wide range of musical genres including Jazz, Classical, music for film, Pop, Hi-Life, Salsa, Reggae, and Calypso and has worked with many renowned artists including Nat Adderly, Ravi Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Rosemary Clooney, Billy Higgins and more.
